Seasonal practice

Start with observation

Before rituals, before festivals: notice what is actually happening outside this week. Which trees have turned. What the light does at 4pm. What's in the shops cheaply.

Traditions vary

Hemisphere and place

The Wheel of the Year was assembled in mid-twentieth-century Britain and maps onto a temperate northern climate. Practitioners elsewhere often shift dates by six months or rewrite the meanings entirely, and that is normal and widely accepted.

Small and repeatable

One seasonal walk, one seasonal meal, one written page. A practice you'll actually keep beats an elaborate one you'll abandon by February.

Worth knowing

If the festival calendar doesn't match your climate, the calendar is the thing that's wrong, not you.

Worth remembering

Seasonal practice is mostly noticing, written down.
