Lesson 9 of 9 ยท 4 min

Creating your own practice

Beginning with what you have

You can start without crystals, candles, herbs, tarot cards, an athame, a chalice or an altar cloth. A window, a few minutes and your attention are enough to be going on with. Tools stand for ideas, so getting to know the idea first helps you work out whether you'd like the object too.

Household alternatives

A clean tea towel is an altar cloth. A mug is a chalice. A pebble from a walk is your earth symbol. A butter knife or a pointed finger can direct intention as well as a ceremonial blade.

Build slowly

Pick one practice, such as noticing the moon or a two-minute grounding, and do it when it feels right. Consistency matters more than intensity, and missing days is not failure.

Write it down

Your Book of Shadows is simply your record: what you tried, what happened, what you thought. Useful beats beautiful.

Worth remembering

Begin with attention and a notebook. Everything else is optional.
